There’s nothing better than a summer road trip. The kind that lets you feel real adventure, navigate somewhere unknown, discover a new favorite place or time. The windows are suddenly down, and you don’t even care if you end up with a hand full of tangles. You sing along to James Taylor and Bruce Springsteen, stop to hear the story of another random adventurer. Conversation is limitless. Philosophy flows, dreams are shared. The world is your oyster.
Well, maybe that was years ago, but it happened.
But even road trips where you now play official kid circus director with a wagon full of mini-yous have adventure all their own. The adventure becomes the challenge of balancing a new game of counting blue cars and red cars, keeping mix-and-match lids on “washable” markers, and having a snack for the ninth time… because it buys you just a few more minutes before another wave of entertainment begins.
But sometimes, just sometimes… you have some down time.
Maybe the kids have slipped into a quick car nap, and your driver’s got the wheel. Or maybe you have made yet another bathroom stop along a dirt road to get some serious business done. And this time it’s your partner’s turn to keep kid shoes dry. And you have just a moment to read. And dive into the adventure on the page.
In the case that you are graced with that moment, big or small, here are some possible reads on your next journey. Dive in.
Cheers to road trips, and cheers to reading!
